Tin Cup Stacking

Solve the Servant of the Lake cup puzzle in the courtyard: where both tin cups are, how the etched lines set the stacking order, and how to pay the coachman.

Light spoilers. This page names rooms, items and characters you meet, but keeps the story beats out of it.

The first puzzle in the game, and the one that decides whether you get through the estate door at all. The driver wants paying, and the payment is inside a stack of cups.

Where the cups are

There are two tin cups in the courtyard:

  • one held by the coachman
  • one on the window ledge to the left

Players routinely find the first and assume that is all there is. Check the left ledge before you decide the puzzle is broken.

The stacking rule

Diagram of the tin cup stacking order by etched line count

Each cup has lines etched into it. The number of lines sets its position. Stack the cups by line count, reading left to right.

Zoom in before you commit — on the mobile build especially, the etched lines are thin enough to miscount from the default view, and a miscount looks identical to a wrong solution.

Stacked correctly, the cups yield the coins. Give them to the driver and he hands over what you need to get inside.

The horse achievement

Petting the Horse is a hidden achievement in this same scene, and it has to be done before you feed the horse its carrot.

Click the horse repeatedly — including its glasses. The official clue is "Something wiggles! One click may not be enough," and it means it: this is not a single interaction, it is a dozen. Keep clicking until the horse visibly reacts.

Feed it the carrot first and the window closes for that playthrough.

What comes next

With the driver paid, you move indoors to the hallway and the porridge. The whole opening block is covered in the Day 1 walkthrough, and it is identical in the free demo.
