Use the berries to plug every hole the insect can escape into, then kill it once it has nowhere left to go.
Hitting it before the holes are blocked does nothing — it simply relocates to another hole. This is the puzzle people search for as the berry puzzle, the blueberries, or the insect in the porridge; the berries are the tool, not a garnish.
First: the berries are locked
You cannot start this puzzle until you are holding the berries, and they are behind a chain of three steps in Aldous's bedroom:
- Shave Aldous with the razor from the shape box. You will nick his earlobe — this is scripted.
- Open the window and feed the earlobe to the raven. It trades you a key.
- Unlock the cabinet with that key. The berries are inside.
If the raven refuses to deal, you have not shaved him yet. That is the single most common reason this section stalls.
Then: the serving order
The bowl has to reach Aldous before anything is living in it:
bowl → porridge → spoon → berries
Out of order and the scene does not advance. Full ingredient list and cook order on the porridge page.
Trapping the insect
Once the bowl is in front of him, something starts moving in the surface of the porridge.
- The insect runs between holes in the porridge.
- Place a berry in each hole, one at a time. A blocked hole is one fewer place for it to go.
- When every escape route is plugged, kill it.
There is no timer on this. Work methodically rather than chasing it — chasing is what makes it look unsolvable.
Why "blueberries" gets you here
The berries read as blueberries to most players and that is what a lot of people type. It is the same puzzle. There is no separate blueberry item and no second berry puzzle later in the game.
