Easter Eggs and Series Nods

Servant of the Lake easter eggs: the Rusty Lake references built into the Vanderboom estate, the recurring cat, and what the game shares with Rusty Lake: Roots.

Light spoilers. This page names rooms, items and characters you meet, but keeps the story beats out of it.

Servant of the Lake is the nineteenth Rusty Lake game and the eighth premium release, and it is set at the Vanderboom estate decades before Rusty Lake: Roots. That placement is the source of most of what players are calling easter eggs — they are less hidden jokes than deliberate seams with the rest of the series.

The Vanderboom estate itself

The family you spend the weekend serving is the Vanderboom family, the same line Roots follows across generations. Meeting Aldous, Alexandra, William and the infant James as a servant — before any of the events Roots covers — is the central reference, and everything in the house sits on top of it.

Rustie the cat

The orange cat wanders through all three days and is involved in four separate interactions:

  • taking the milk in the hallway on Day 1 (before the dead mouse)
  • receiving the tea leaves during the evening service
  • the green powder clue — "The cat also likes herbs. Maybe Rusty puked more than once."
  • sitting on the maid's lap on Day 3 to be petted

The clue text calls him Rusty, which is about as direct as a series nod gets.

The alchemy thread

Day 3 is built entirely around assisting with alchemy, and the elixir you are asked to test — and instead feed to the parrot — belongs to the same occult-experiment lineage the series has run since the Cube Escape games. The Vanderbooms' "dark alchemical secrets" are the official store description's own words, not a fan reading.

The raven and the crow

Two separate birds, two separate interactions, both at windows:

  • the raven on Day 1 Morning that trades a key for Aldous's severed earlobe
  • the crow in the attic on Day 1 Night that only appears after you move in and out of the containers repeatedly

Birds at windows are a recurring motif across the series, and this game puts one in each half of the first day.

The telescope

The final secret ends with you using a telescope to look at an upper window of the estate. Without spoiling what is there, it is the game's clearest link forward to what the family becomes. Full route on the "You've found him!" page.

Where to look next

The estate rewards clicking on things that are not tasks — the second table leg from the left hides a note, the paintings keep giving past the third dusting, and the rope in the dining hall does something after enough clicks. Most of what reads as an easter egg in this game is an achievement in disguise; the full list is on the hidden achievements page.

Still to be confirmed

We could not verify the following against more than one source, so we have left it out rather than guess. This page is updated as confirmations come in.
