Light spoilers. This page names rooms, items and characters you meet, but keeps the story beats out of it.

The Vanderbooms are the family whose house you work in for three days, and the family the wider Rusty Lake series has been circling for years. Servant of the Lake places you in their estate in the early 18th century, during their annual reunion and feast — a tradition the game treats as ordinary and which, from the servants' entrance, plainly is not.

The setup

You are hired for one weekend. The family gathers, eats, and goes about a set of household routines you are there to service. The game gives you a chore roster rather than a plot: wake Mr. Aldous, cook the porridge, ready the reception, serve tea, help with the bath, assist with the alchemy.

The horror is structural. You are not investigating the Vanderbooms — you are helping them, competently, in the order they ask, and the picture assembles itself out of what you are made to do.

The alchemy

The store description names it directly: the family has dark alchemical secrets, and by Day 3 assisting with them is your actual job. You mix, you are asked to test an elixir, and the sensible thing to do with it is feed it to the parrot.

Alchemy is the through-line the Rusty Lake series has run since the Cube Escape games, and this is the earliest point in the timeline where we watch the Vanderbooms practising it as a household activity rather than a legacy.

The estate

The house is the whole game. Courtyard, hallway, kitchen, Aldous's bedroom, the garden, the parlor, the attic, the second-floor bathroom, the balcony, the cellar, the dining hall. You unlock it in the order the chores require — the chandelier opens the garden, the alchemy day opens the cellar.

There is also an upper window you never enter. The game's final secret ends with you looking at it through a telescope, which tells you roughly how much of this house you were actually allowed to see.

Why the reunion matters

An annual gathering means this has happened before and will happen again. Whatever you witness across the weekend is routine for them — the family has a tradition, and you have been hired into the middle of one iteration of it.

That framing is what makes the servant's-eye view work. Nothing is explained to you because nothing about it is unusual to them.

Where this sits in the series

The estate appears decades before Rusty Lake: Roots, which follows the same line across generations. See how it connects to Roots, or the character list for who you actually meet.

Still to be confirmed

We could not verify the following against more than one source, so we have left it out rather than guess. This page is updated as confirmations come in.

  • The precise generational relationships between Aldous, Alexandra, William and James — the game reveals these across the three days and community documentation is a day old.
